Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

overview:

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms within a deep vein—most commonly in the legs.

While it may sometimes develop silently, it can quickly become serious if the clot travels to the lungs, leading to a pulmonary embolism (PE).

In Singapore, DVT is not uncommon, partly due to sedentary lifestyles and long working hours that reduce circulation in the legs.

Early diagnosis and timely care are crucial to prevent complications and maintain healthy blood flow.

At Spectrum Vascular, we provide prompt evaluation and evidence-based treatment for DVT in Singapore, ensuring every patient receives safe and effective care tailored to their needs.

Dr Tay Jia Sheng

Senior Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon

MBBS (Singapore), M.Med (Surgery), FRCSEd (Gen Surg)

Dr Tay Jia Sheng is a distinguished vascular surgeon in Singapore, specialising in minimally invasive vascular, endovascular and endovenous procedures. He treats a broad range of conditions including varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis, peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot ulcers and aortic aneurysms.

As a founding vascular surgeon at Sengkang General Hospital, Dr Tay led one of Singapore’s busiest vascular units with strong outcomes and low complication rates. He is among the few local surgeons skilled in advanced techniques such as minimally invasive vein harvesting and complex endovascular aneurysm repairs.

Outside the operating theatre, he has taught at Yong Loo Lin, Duke-NUS and Lee Kong Chian medical schools. Recognised with awards such as the SingHealth Quality Service Award and COVID-19 Resilience Medal, he now practises at Spectrum Vascular & General Surgery, offering patient-centred care with a focus on minimally invasive treatment.

What Is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?

Deep vein thrombosis develops when blood flow in a deep vein slows down or gets obstructed, causing a clot to form.

This typically happens in the lower limbs, such as the calf or thigh, but can also occur in other parts of the body.

If a clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, it can block blood flow, resulting in a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening emergency.

Deep Vein Thrombosis Symptoms and Risk Factors

Symptoms of DVT

Symptoms may vary in severity and can sometimes go unnoticed. In some patients, there are no visible signs until the condition progresses.

Common symptoms include:

If you experience sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing (especially with blood), or dizziness, seek medical attention immediately, as these may indicate a pulmonary embolism.

What Causes DVT?

Deep vein thrombosis develops when the flow of blood slows down or the vessel walls are damaged, triggering the clotting process.

Common causes and risk factors include:

While some factors can’t be avoided, early screening and preventive care from a DVT specialist can significantly reduce risk.

How Is DVT Diagnosed?

Diagnosis begins with a detailed consultation and physical examination to assess symptoms and risk factors.

Since DVT symptoms can overlap with other conditions, imaging and blood tests are usually required to confirm the diagnosis.

Common diagnostic methods include:

Early diagnosis is crucial. Identifying DVT promptly allows for timely treatment to prevent the clot from growing or travelling to the lungs.

Treatment for Deep Vein Thrombosis

Treatment depends on the severity of the clot, your overall health and risk of complications.

At Spectrum Vascular, our vascular surgeon provides a full range of medical and minimally invasive options for DVT treatment in Singapore, aiming to restore healthy circulation and prevent recurrence.

Anticoagulant (Blood-Thinning) Therapy

The first-line treatment for most patients. Medications such as heparin, warfarin or newer direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) prevent existing clots from enlarging and reduce the risk of new ones forming.

Your specialist will monitor dosage carefully to balance effectiveness with safety.

Compression Therapy

Graduated compression stockings help improve blood flow and reduce swelling or discomfort.

They also lower the risk of developing post-thrombotic syndrome (chronic pain and swelling following DVT).

Thrombolysis (Clot-Dissolving Treatment)

In more severe cases, especially when the clot is extensive or causing tissue damage, clot-dissolving medication may be administered through a catheter directly into the affected vein.

This procedure, known as catheter-directed thrombolysis, is performed under imaging guidance and managed closely by a vascular surgeon.

Thrombectomy (Clot Removal)

For selected patients, especially those who cannot receive medication, a minimally invasive procedure may be performed to physically remove the clot and restore flow.

Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) Filter

If anticoagulants cannot be used safely, a small metal filter may be placed in the inferior vena cava—the main vein returning blood to the heart—to prevent clots from reaching the lungs.

Timely Evaluation Can Make All the Difference

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious but treatable condition. With early evaluation and appropriate therapy, most patients recover fully and return to normal activities.

At Spectrum Vascular, we focus on accurate diagnosis, evidence-based treatment and long-term vein health management.

Our vascular surgeon in Singapore is trained in minimally invasive procedures designed to ensure safety, comfort and durable results.

FAQ: Patient Information

No. DVT requires medical attention. Without treatment, the clot may grow or dislodge, leading to serious complications.

Not necessarily. Some patients have minimal discomfort, which is why screening is important if you have risk factors.

Yes. Staying active, avoiding long periods of immobility, using compression stockings, and addressing underlying conditions can reduce risk.

Untreated DVT can cause chronic leg swelling, skin changes, and in severe cases, pulmonary embolism.

If DVT is diagnosed as a medical condition, many tests and treatments are claimable under insurance. Our clinic can advise based on your plan.

If you notice swelling, pain, or skin discolouration in one leg, or have a history of varicose veins or recent surgery, it’s best to consult a vascular surgeon early for assessment.
