Clin Asst Prof Dr Tay Jia Sheng is a distinguished surgeon in general surgery, with a subspecialty focus in minimally invasive vascular, endovascular, and endovenous surgery. and endovenous surgery. At the forefront of surgical innovation, he has been leading an extremely busy practice within the Vascular & Endovascular Service at Sengkang General Hospital in Singapore. Dr. Tay’s practice is renowned for its exemplary patient outcomes and exceptionally low complication rates, setting a benchmark in surgical excellence.
In the dynamic and demanding environment of modern surgery, Dr. Tay has demonstrated remarkable proficiency and dedication as a vascular surgeon in Singapore. Over the last three years, he has impressively conducted between 633 to 778 operations annually, a testament to his expertise and unwavering commitment to patient care. His high volume of surgeries not only reflects his adeptness in the operating room but also underscores his pivotal role as a vascular surgeon in advancing the field of vascular and endovascular surgery.
Earning his double degree from the renowned Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2004, he embarked on a comprehensive journey in the surgical disciplines to broaden his horizons. His formative years were marked by enriching experiences across a spectrum of surgical disciplines, including General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Paediatric Surgery.
He began his Advanced Specialist Training journey in Cardiothoracic Surgery, gaining years of comprehensive knowledge and skills in this highly subspecialised field, with significant exposure to Paediatric and Adult Cardiac Surgery. With a goal to reach out and help as many patients as possible, he later transitioned to Advanced Specialist Training in General Surgery with the ultimate aim of practising Vascular Surgery. This strategic shift allowed him to expand his capabilities and surgical acumen, enhancing his ability to provide top-notch care as a vascular surgeon, to a broader patient base.
Dr. Tay's dedication to excellence in his field led him to obtain a Master of Medicine in Surgery from NUS in 2015 and become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2017. He further honed his skills whilst practicing at Changi General Hospital before joining Sengkang General Hospital in 2019 as a key founding surgeon of the Vascular & Endovascular Service, making significant contributions to the establishment and development of the unit. His comprehensive training and diverse surgical experience solidified his position as a trusted expert in his field, amongst other vascular doctors.
Amidst a demanding schedule of clinical duties and teaching commitments, he was privileged to receive comprehensive training opportunities abroad, including in Australia, South Korea, and Thailand. These experiences have allowed him to learn and perfect a variety of innovative techniques from various renowned international experts. By bringing these advanced practices back home, he has been able to elevate the calibre of patient care he delivers in his own practice.
With a natural aptitude for surgical precision, he has mastered a wide array of advanced procedures. This exceptional proficiency spans across various endovascular aortic aneurysm repair techniques including rupture endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (rEVAR), endosuture aneurysm repair, and chimney and parallel graft techniques, among others. He is one of but a few contemporary vascular surgeons in Singapore who can perform minimally invasive saphenous vein graft harvest for arterial bypass.
As a preeminent authority in peripheral atherectomy and intravascular ultrasound, he is at the forefront of state-of-the-art endovascular care and sets new benchmarks for modern endovascular procedures. His proficiency in utilising a diverse range of peripheral atherectomy devices, such as orbital, rotational, and directional atherectomy, along with distal embolic protection devices, clearly attests to his surgical acumen and exceptional clinical outcomes.
His mastery extends to intravascular lithotripsy and advanced catheter thrombolysis/thrombectomy devices, including rheolytic thrombolysis/thrombectomy, rotational thrombectomy, and aspiration thrombectomy. These sophisticated techniques are instrumental in enhancing the care he provides, underscoring his commitment to embracing the latest medical technology.
Recognised as a highly skilled vascular surgeon in endovascular and vein surgery, he is often invited to share his expertise at international conferences, live workshops, and training showcases. His roles as a proctor, speaker, and live case operator highlight his prominence in the field and his commitment to advancing surgical techniques for his fellow surgeons.
Dr. Tay is not only an accomplished professional in his specialist and subspecialist fields, but also a committed educator and mentor, distinguished by his extensive and noteworthy achievements. His dedication to teaching and mentoring has been consistently recognised through multiple prestigious awards. In 2016, he was honoured with the Best Educator Award from the Eastern Health Alliance. His exceptional teaching abilities were further acknowledged when he received the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in both 2020 and 2021. His contributions to education were again celebrated with the Special Recognition Award from the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technological University for the academic years 2022-2023.

His longstanding dedication and significant contributions to service was further recognised with the SingHealth Long Service Award in 2023. Continuing his streak of excellence, Dr. Tay was awarded the Silver in the SingHealth Quality Service Awards 2024, highlighting his consistent and exceptional contributions to quality in healthcare and education.
